PE5_Flash

ok I am about a third of the way through the tutorials. My goal is to have an animation as my last post for personal experiences. From the first to now I have come along way. Form stick figure and bubble trees to color gradients and deco greenery. Still learning but it takes a while for  this:)

PE4_Flash

For this assignment I decided to use the Lynda.com tutorials for Flash animation. I completed the first couple of chapters and realize i will probably need to re-do the tutorials just to get the hang of it completely. For now I know how to make and fill shapes and what the tools on the side are. Hopefully my final post will be an animation of some kind.

BP12_OMM_Climate Challenge

As president I will use this tool to help effect the change in the environment and our economy. Thank you and Good Night

PE3_FreeMind

I have learned a lot about FreeMind. from the original mind map I started

I can check off what the icons are for. After a bit of investigation I found the right place to see them all.

Also without having to individually change the levels of thought, You can automatically change the colors with a press of a button.
There is another spot for you to show collaboration. Any new comments or branches added are in yellow.
This way I could share the mind map or a start of one with my students and they can each add to it.
For those interested in learning more about FreeMind it provides a tutorial for you. By clicking on the links you can find out about everything.

I also found out what the exports look like.
This is an export of a plain HTML. It only shows up as an outline. This could be helpful for the students who need everything in a certain order
This one was a drop down branched XHTML. It would be good for all students.
I know I still have more to learn about this application, but what I learned has lead to new Ideas of how to use technology in my classroom. The only problem I could not figure out was how to implement it wiht limited access to computers.

PE2_FreeMInd

So I played around with FreeMind and made a map of what I need to know and what I already know.As you can see I still have some figuring out to do. From the PE1 post you can see I figured out how to add things and what some of the icons are for. They are basically pictures to represent ideas. The numbers are the order of importance to me. But I still need to learn how to remove icons form the spaces. And I need to figure how to make the map a different direction. I think it would be easier if the map was vertical rather than horizontal.

PE1_FreeMind

Mind mapping has always been difficult for me. I typically start with an end in mind rather than a beginning. So for my personally experience I decided to try mind mapping. There are a lot of icons and actions to be done with it and I need time to figure it all out. I know this is a useful resource but i am not sure how to use it. As with all experiences it needs to start with a blank page:)

I chose to research the Climate Change game. As I played it i was picturing my students at the middle and end of the year learning about climate changes and human impact, both positive and negative, on the environment. At the beginning of the game, you are walked through how to play and set "policies".

The policies you make impact the several things: economy, power, food, water, and carbon emissions.  With all the talk about helping the environment it is hard for students to see how much work goes into fixing the problems. Most just take the stand that it needs to be fixed, so fix it. They don't understand the cost is in terms of money and how we live.

As with all things in the world, the only thing to expect is the unexpected. The game throws the unexpected cost to you. This one was a flood. The President decides to build better flood preventions or not, based on opinion and money it would cost. The money needs to be budgeted so as to provide for the unexpected.

At the end of each turn, which is a decade, there is a news article about how your policies are doing. In this one i chose to implement an energy tax and the people did not like it. My ratings in the polls dropped below 50% and my opponent began to blast me. Just further, show the problem with trying to regulate energy consumption and carbon emissions.

As the president of a European Country, you also must attend and set global policy to reduce carbon emissions. Every 3 turns or 30 years you meet with the other nations. The approval of you policies and actions will be judged by the them. If you met your goals then they are more likely to set a carbon reduction. If you did not meet your goal then you can offer to help fund other nations as a way to get their approval to set a cap. It doesn't always work.
In the end, your environment, wealth and popularity are the three main scores. As you can see here, I saved the environment, but had almost no money and no one liked me. This last section shows students the impact of the decisions they made. I made great choices for the environment but bankrupted my country and will never be re-elected.

I highly recommend this to any one teaching about the environment. It is, in my opinion, more for high school students, but the color codes of red is bad and green is good are easy for anyone to understand.

BP5_WiZiQ

I have chosen to research WiZiQ. This site is free to join and once you have created a page you can use it as a central place to link everything. I have found that some of the sites we use for FSO are blocked by my district settings, such as viddler. This site allows me to save video and documents in one location as well as link to outside places. I can then give my students an invitation to view the items. I think i can best use this site for students who are having absence issues. I have one student in particular who has chronic painful migraines and is under a neurologists care. She has missed many days and is very behind. I could video and edit the lessons I teach each day and upload them to the page, along with any assignments or even lab assignments we do. This way she can view the day's lesson and assignments and not be as far behind. I can also create a copy of any test i create on this site to share with the students. Again I plan to use these features mainly for absent students or is students need to review for a exams.

I can also use this site for part of my ARP. Since the data I plan to collect is student feedback, what better way for them give feedback than to see the lesson as an observer rather than a participant and comment on it.

Other interesting features of this site are the free public classes. people can sit in on classes provided by other members on any subject. You roll over "learn" and a menu appears as seen in the picture
From there you go to "Attend Online Classes" and you are brought to a page where you can search for a subject and see what classes are offered and when:
I think this site will really help me this year.

BP4_blogonize

I chose to use blogonize as my Web2.0 application. My plan is to put out what we did in class and have my students comment on it.
